GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS

One of the earliest stories to feature bears who behaved like human beings was Goldilocks and the Three Bears written by the English poet Robert Southey. In the story, the three bears do lots of things like humans, such as sleeping in beds, shaving and, of course, eating porridge. The story was published as long ago as 1837. The bears in this story weren't very friendly and Goldilocks was actually frightened of them when she woke up in their house.

Paddington Bear lives in London, England, but he originally came from Darkest Peru where he was brought up by his Aunt Lucy after he was orphaned following an earthquake when he was just a few weeks old. Aunt Lucy went to live in the Home for Retired Bears in Lima so she taught her nephew English and then sent him to England. Paddington eventually arrived on Paddington Station in London which is where Mr and Mrs Brown first met him. He got his unusla name from the name of the railway station.
The Browns were meeting their daughter Judy at the station when Mr Brown spotted a bear sitting on a suitcase, behind a pile of mail bags, close to the lost property office. The bear was wearing nothing but a hat and a label hanging round his neck upon which were written the words “Please Look After This Bear. Thank You.” They did!
